How do I convert a table to Markdown?

Copy the cells from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and paste them into the source box, or open a .csv, .tsv or .xlsx file. The Markdown table appears next to it. Set whether the first row is a header, pick the alignment, then copy the result or download a .md file.

  1. Copy the cells from your spreadsheet, or select Open a file for a .csv, .tsv or .xlsx.
  2. Paste into the source box. A table copied from a web page is read as HTML automatically.
  3. For an Excel file with several sheets, choose the sheet you want.
  4. Set First row is a header, the column alignment, and whether columns are lined up.
  5. Select Copy, or Download .md to save the file.

Which table formats can I convert?

The tool reads anything separated by commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes, Excel .xlsx files, and tables copied from a web page. Spreadsheets copy to the clipboard as tab-separated text, so pasting from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers works directly.

SourceWhat is keptLimits and notes
Paste from Excel, Sheets or NumbersCell values, row and column layoutSpreadsheets copy as tab-separated text. Formatting, colours and formulas are not part of the copy.
CSV / TSV files (.csv, .tsv)All cells, including quoted fields with commas or line breaksUp to 5 MB. The separator is detected, and you can force comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
Excel (.xlsx)Cell values, every sheet, dates as readable datesUp to 15 MB. Formulas come through as their calculated value. Older .xls files are not supported: save as .xlsx first.
Table copied from a web pageCells, including merged ones, which are spread across the rows they coverRead as HTML, which is cleaned of scripts and styles first. Only the first table in what you paste is used.

Large tables are cut to the first 5,000 rows and 200 columns, so your browser stays responsive.

Frequently asked questions

Is my spreadsheet uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read inside your browser, including .xlsx files, which are unzipped and parsed on your device. Nothing is sent to mimobr.com or any other server, so the tool is safe for private data such as financial or customer tables.

How are commas, pipes and line breaks inside cells handled?

Quoted fields are read correctly, so a comma or a line break inside a cell does not split it. In the Markdown table, pipe characters are escaped and line breaks inside a cell become a <br> tag, so the table never breaks apart.

What happens to merged cells and formulas?

Markdown tables have no merged cells, so a merged cell is written into the first cell it covers and the cells beside it are left empty. Excel formulas come through as the value they calculated, because that value is what is stored in the file.

Can I choose which row is the header?

Markdown tables always have one header row. If you turn off First row is a header, the tool writes Column 1, Column 2 and so on, and keeps all your rows as data. To use a different row as the header, move it to the top in the source box.

Is the converter free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account or sign-up, has no ads and adds no watermark. The only limits are the file size and a cap of 5,000 rows, which exist so your browser does not run out of memory.

Who built this tool?

I'm Reinaldo Nani, a MarTech Stack Architect & DXP Manager based in São Paulo, Brazil. Reports and analyses usually start life in a spreadsheet and end up in a Markdown document, so this converter handles that step. It pairs with my text to Markdown converter.
